Anchialus was the principal stronghold of the southern Black Sea coast, guarded by an army of five thousand men. Tohun and his warriors were tasked with scouting the surroundings of Anchialus. On the outskirts of the city, Tohun and his band came upon a winery. The hospitable owner welcomed Tohun and his men and treated them to his finest ruby wine. The warriors feasted through the night. At dawn, just as the men were mounting their horses, Khan Krum appeared before them. At the sight of his intoxicated warriors, the Khan flew into a rage. Tohun, the leader of the scouts, could barely bring himself to speak:


— Forgive us, my Lord, for breaking the law! We stand ready to carry out any command you give us.

— Very well, then — take Anchialus! — replied the furious Khan.

— At once! — answered Tohun. He drew his sabre from its scabbard and rallied his men: — Charge!

With a thunderous battle cry, the warriors stormed through the open gates of Anchialus. The horsemen swept through the streets in scattered groups, creating the illusion of a vast and unstoppable army. The defenders of the city, struck with panic, fled to the harbour, boarded their ships and sailed south. And so Anchialus was taken without a single drop of blood being spilled.
From the nearest hilltop, Khan Krum watched the unfolding events in astonishment.
When the battle was over, Tohun presented himself before his ruler and proudly declared:
— Your order has been carried out!
Khan Krum then summoned the owner of the winery and asked him to pour a cup of the very wine the warriors had drunk. He drained the cup in a single draught and exclaimed:
— Now I understand it all! After wine such as this, my warriors could conquer Rome itself!

From that day on, Khan Krum revoked his decree to uproot the vineyards, and ordered that this region henceforth be named after Tohun.
